Go with a 30 yard dumpster rental in Lexington, KY when a 20 would be full before you're halfway done. It's the biggest box on our list, meant for whole-house guts, additions, new construction and big cleanouts.
A big renovation or a full gut
Debris from new construction or an addition
Flooring or drywall from most of the house
A whole-house or estate cleanout
A commercial cleanout or a tenant turnover
Emptying a house somebody lived in for decades fills a dumpster fast. You've got furniture, carpet, old cabinets, and whatever's in the basement and garage. With a 30 you can clear it in one pass instead of deciding what makes the cut. On city trash service, mattresses can go to the curb on pickup day, laid flat beside the carts.
Some things have to leave another way. Fridges, freezers and window AC units hold refrigerant. Old paint, pool chemicals, propane tanks and car batteries can go to the City's household hazardous waste days. Fayette County residents can drop electronics off free at the City's Electronics Recycling Center on Versailles Road. Tires stay out too.
The City's Loan-a-Box isn't for businesses or contractors, and commercial vehicles aren't allowed at its free trash days. If you're running a remodel, an addition or a new build, a rented roll-off on site keeps the debris in one place. Our commercial dumpster rental page has more for contractors.
A 30 takes up more driveway than the smaller sizes, and the truck needs room to back in and set it down. Watch for low wires and big limbs over the drive, too. If the street's tight or the driveway's short, bring it up on the quote call. It's easier to sort out on the phone than with the driver in your street.
If the driveway won't work, a 30 can only go on a public street once the City's Traffic Engineering office issues a lane blockage permit. Here's what the City says: the permit is free, a routine request needs at least three working days' notice, and it's good for up to 30 days. They won't issue one if there's a reasonable spot on your property, and a dumpster on the street without a permit can be impounded. If the street is even a maybe, plan for it early.
Concrete, dirt and brick are the wrong things to fill a big box with. They get heavy long before a 30 looks full, and dumping is charged by weight. Breaking up a patio or an old driveway? Say so on the call, because the heavy stuff may be better off in a smaller box of its own.
